This article explains and offers guidance on frequently asked questions about choosing a custom
embroidered personalized or monogrammed gift.  We hope you will find this information informative and
useful.

Why should you give a personalized gift?

Personalized and custom monogrammed gifts show that you gave thought and attention to selecting
your gift, and therefore that you care about the gift recipient.   A personalized embroidered or
monogrammed gift also shows that you spent time thinking about the gift and the recipient well in
advance of the giving.  This is in part because a custom personalized gift is not a gift that you "pick up
on the way" to the party or visit.  When you give or send a personalized gift, you also have the
opportunity to show the gift recipient that you know their interests, hobbies, favorite colors, or even their
sense of humor.  Additionally, a personalized gift is "one of a kind" and gives you the opportunity to
express yourself and your creativity in a way that will be appreciated and cherished by the gift recipient.
Personalized monogrammed gifts are also more likely to be kept and remembered than a standard "off
the rack" item that has no personalized sentimental value.  When someone receives a gift embroidered
with their initials, their favorite saying, an "inside joke", their business name, their hobby or special
interest, or an image that appeals to their unique personality, that item is too "special" to throw away.
Embroidered gifts carry a particularly custom quality.  The sheen of the embroidery thread and the
stitching of the name into the fiber of the fabric provides a permanence and a quality appearance that
printing does not provide.  The elegance and raised appearance of embroidery combines with the
"personal touch" of the personalized gift to create a special memory.

How to choose a personalized custom embroidered or monogrammed gift:

When you choose a personalized custom embroidered or monogrammed gift, begin by thinking of the
likes, hobbies, interests and personality of the person to whom you are giving the gift.   If they are for
example a marathon runner or triathlete competitor, then consider a gift that will reflect that passion,
such as a
marathon runner hat or a hat with a triathlon logo personalized with the date of their
upcoming or special date / event name.  If he or she has a passion for cooking, grilling, arts & crafts, or
gardening, consider an
apron with pockets for tools, embroidered with their name, special dish or a
saying that relates to their work such as "John's Masterpiece Backyard B-B-Q" or "Jillian's Culinary
Creations". . . There are countless options once you identify the hobby, topic and type of tone you are
looking for (serious, funny, reminiscent, folksy etc.)  If the person is a teacher, consider a
tote bag to
carry the school papers home for grading, and an embroidered saying "Ms. Jones - #1 Teacher" or "My
Favorite Teacher - Mr. Smith".  For coaches, a
baseball cap with "Coach" and their name is always
appreciated.  Coaches also like
hand towels with their names embroidered on them.  For people who
own their own small businesses, a hat with their business name or website address embroidered on the
front is always an appreciated and useful personalized gift.
Personalized towels are long-lasting and
useful wedding gifts, engagement gifts, thank you gifts and housewarming gifts.  Embroidered with a
monogram or other personalized lettering, custom embroidered towels will be appreciated again and
again for many years.  Custom embroidered
pillow cases make a unique wedding shower gift or birthday
gift, and remind the recipient of the giver whenever they are used.  Is there an "inside joke" that only
you and the recipient share?  Consider a
hat embroidered with reference to that "inside" information
and your friend will think of you every time he or she sees the hat.  If the recipient is a veteran, consider
a hat that commemorates his or her military service.  If the recipient is patriotic, religious, or committed
to a particular cause or mission, consider an embroidery that displays and states that passion on a hat
for all to see.  You can get as creative as you would like to when you create a personalized embroidered
gift.  Let your imagination work out a fresh idea -- break away from the notion that you can only choose
from "what is on the shelf" at a store.  Give a gift that communicates your creativity.  There are infinite
possibilities for these personalized items when you take the time to plan a personalized gift.

In addition to the type of personalized embroidered gift, give thought to the color and font style you
use in order to convey the tone and feeling that you want to communicate with the gift.  Is this a 'fancy"
gift for a wedding?  If so, consider black or brown embroidery thread on a light or white background for
a classic look that will last.   Is it a "fun" gift for a birthday?  Consider colorful thread colors such as
orange, red, hot pink or bright green.   Is it a "thank you" gift for a coach, teacher, parent, grandparent
or friend?  Consider blue or green for a cheerful look.  In addition to colors, the font styles communicate
different moods.  For example, comic sans is "fun", while script fonts are more elegant, and square slab
serif is more "collegiate" while neuropolitical font is more modern.  Each font conveys a feeling that,
when combined with the color choices, make the personalized gift unique and one-of-a-kind.

When you get the positive feeling attained from giving a personalized embroidered gift, you will return
to that process again and again when gift-giving needs arise.  And those to whom you give gifts will
appreciate that you give the special gift that is implicit in a personalized embroidered gift -- the gift of
your own time, thought, creativity and attention.

What is the difference between a "monogram" and other personalized embroidery?

The word "monogram" is often used to refer to any personalized custom embroidery.  But actually, a
"monogram" is a 1, 2 or 3 - letter initials monogram such as a person's 3 initials with the larger letter in
the center.  You can view examples of
monograms  here.

Monograms for a "couple" are typically done with the couple's shared last name initial in the center,
larger than the outer 2 letters, which represent the first initial of each person.  An individual person's
monogram is typically done with their last name (surname) in the center, their first name initial on the left
and their middle initial on the right.

Personalized lettering other than initials is referred to as personalized or custom embroidered
lettering.   At Name-on.com we are happy to help you with ideas and options to help in your selection of
the perfect personalized custom embroidered or monogrammed gift.   If you have questions or would
